Becky Byrum Obituary

A Servant's Heart- Rebecca "Becky" Marks Byrum
September 16, 1956- July 22, 2016
Becky Byrum's greatest dream came true on July 22, 2016 as she went to Heaven to worship at the Throne of Our Lord. Her servant's spirit is carried on by her surviving husband, Steve Byrum; son, Scotty Byrum; daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Ty Hensley; grandchildren, Avery and Ace; sister and husband, Brenda (Billy) Stanton; brothers and their wives, Bobby (Kay) Marks, Ben ( Debra) Marks, Bill (Leslie) Marks, and Brad (Terri) Marks, along with countless in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends--all of which she considered a part of her immediate "family." Those blessed to encounter Becky--truly one of God's angels sent to this earth--quickly witnessed the true meaning of a Servant's heart.
From her early life in Mansfield, Georgia, Becky set about serving family meals and tending to one of the largest dairy herds in the state. Three days after graduating from high school, she began a 43-year ‘affair' with her life-long love and began serving an even larger ‘family': the United States of America. As one of the many unsung spouses of a military veteran, Becky ensured that every new military base, every dislocated family, and every corner of this great nation felt the comfort of an angel's love. Whether serving on the PTA, teaching in over a dozen schools, ministering to the spouses club, leading troops of Girl and Boy scouts, or providing the cornerstone of faith in any prayer community, Becky's servant's heart provided an ever-overflowing spring of love and compassion.
After retiring to Starrsville, Georgia, Becky's servant heart was called to serve all of mankind! Long before her own diagnosis, she committed herself to finding a cure for cancer in her lifetime. Relay for Life was the catalyst that fueled her passion for serving cancer survivors, and raising awareness and funds for cancer research. Those unparalleled efforts helped lay the foundation for our County's Relay for Life movement. This avenue of service was incredibly amplified as she started her own battle with this deadly disease, making certain that those waging war at her side found warmth, joy, and love in every doctor's office or hospital she graced. Those engaged in the battle against cancer were always considered a part of her family.
As any of the hundreds of "family" across the country can attest, Becky served the Lord Jesus Christ most of all. She taught us all that our role as a Christian requires us to take up Our Cross daily, not questioning "why me?" but looking for the good in God's plan that is always there. Now she serves Him at His throne. Undoubtedly, she is helping prepare a place for the rest of us, fulfilling the greatest promise to which an angel's servant heart aspires--and we can't wait to see her.
