Ronald Steven Coggin Obituary

Ronald Steven Coggin, of Covington, passed away at home on Friday, April 9, 2021, at the age of 77. Born September 14, 1943, Steve was the second of four children born to James LaPrade (Pat) and Nell Neely Coggin. He married Kay Shaw, of Porterdale, Georgia, on May 18, 1968, and loved her through 52 years of marriage. Steve was a 1962 graduate of Newton County High School. He valued his friendships and was instrumental in bringing friends together through helping to organize class reunions and other class activities. He was an avid fan of NASCAR and of UGA football. He held a life-long friendship with his hunting and fishing buddies. The Georgia Boys was a special group he always held close to his heart. In 1987, he was diagnosed with stage IV Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma; and participated in an experimental procedure in Omaha, Nebraska, which helped save his life. Steve fought this disease for 33 years until his death. For several years, he was a part of a network that helped guide and inform others across the country about the peripheral stem cell transplant. Steve joined Western Electric in 1975, which later became AT&T. He retired in 1998. Mr. Coggin was preceded in death by his parents, Pat and Nell Coggin; and brother, Jimmy Coggin.

Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Kay Shaw Coggin; son and daughter-in-law, Derek and Abigail Coggin, of Covington; son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Jennifer Coggin, of Alpharetta; grandchildren, Braeden Coggin, Shaw Coggin, Kathleen Coggin, Brynne Coggin; sister and brother-in-law, Jane Coggin Allen and R.L.
