William "Bill" M. Gibbs, age 94, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026. Born on June 4, 1931, Papa Bill lived a long and meaningful life devoted to his family, hard work, his faith, and the simple joys that brought him happiness.
Papa Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Jody and Laura Gibbs, 6 brothers, and a sister; his son, Mike Harper; son-in-law, Red Robinson; his granddaughter, Renee Freemon; and many beloved dogs who were cherished members of his family throughout the years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Helen Gibbs, whose partnership and devotion were the cornerstone of his life. He also leaves behind his daughters: Linda Jordon; Pam Smith (Rickie); and Gail Robinson.
Papa Bill's legacy continues through his grandchildren: John Robinson (Danielle); April Willett (Westly); Alan Smith (Christie); Chris Harper (Kay); Matt Robinson; and Mark Robinson (Katie). He was also blessed with 15 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandsons, all of whom brought him tremendous pride and joy.
Papa Bill was a long-time member of Glen Haven Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a Yokeservant, an usher and in many other roles throughout the years. His church family was an important part of his life, and he took great pride in serving others with humility and dedication.
He was remembered for his beautiful gardens and for always sharing his vegetables with everyone at church. There was rarely a family gathering without his famous cream corn and green beans on the table. His generosity, especially through the food he lovingly grew and prepared, was one of the many ways he showed his love and hospitality.
Papa Bill proudly owned and operated a service station at Columbia Drive and Glenwood Road for ten years, serving his community with dedication and integrity. Later, he worked for the Newton County School System as a bus driver, where he became a familiar and trusted face to many students and families. Through hard work and leadership, he eventually became Head of Transportation for the school system, a role he carried out with responsibility and pride.
Papa Bill will be remembered for his steady presence, his strong faith, his love for family gatherings, his unwavering work ethic, and the deep care he showed to those around him. His life was a testament to commitment, resilience, and unconditional love.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
