Obituary

Walter Werbenec, age 85, of Oxford, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026. Walter was born in Ukraine on February 19, 1941. He lived a life defined by hard work. Kindness, dedication and a deep love for his family and church. Walter worked as a fabricator and lead man at Hill Phoenix until he retired in 2016. He had a lifelong passion for soccer, both as a player and a coach. Walter found great joy on the field and inspiring others, teaching them teamwork, discipline and perseverance. He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength and positive influence that will live on in all who knew him. Walter will be deeply missed but forever remembered in our hearts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael Werbenec and Maria Werbenec.

Survivors include his loving wife, Christine Werbenec; children, Andrew Werbenec, Mark Werbenec, Marianne Werbenec-Azahar; grandchildren, Ariana Azahar, Deanna Azahar; and sibling, Alex Werbenec, Sr.

A Funeral Mass for Walter will be held Saturday, May 2, 2026, 2:00 P.M., at Mother of God Ukrainian Catholic Church, 2880 Old Highway 138 Northeast, in Conyers, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, in Covington. Friends are invited to visit with the family Friday, May 1, from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M., at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington.
