Obituary

Robert Jackson “Bob” Rutland lived a remarkable life marked by unwavering faith, extraordinary generosity, visionary leadership, and deep love for family. Those who knew him best often described him with one word: generous. Bob gave freely of his time, resources, wisdom, encouragement, and love. He believed that everything he possessed had been entrusted to him by God, and he spent his life giving it away for the benefit of others.

Born in Decatur, Georgia, on June 25, 1941, Bob devoted his life to serving Christ, building businesses, developing leaders, and investing in people. His influence would eventually span boardrooms, universities, ministries, communities, and countless individual lives.

Bob’s business journey began with his family’s company. His grandfather founded Motor Convoy, which became the foundation of what would grow into Allied Holdings. Under Bob’s leadership, Allied evolved into a publicly traded company and became the world’s largest automotive transportation carrier. As Chairman, he was known not only for business success but for his commitment to treating people with dignity and respect. He believed deeply that a company could prosper while honoring both God and people.

Bob’s commitment to ethics and character-based leadership extended far beyond the business world. His vision led to the establishment of the Robert J. Rutland Institute for Ethics at Clemson University, created to encourage ethical decision-making in business, education, and community life. Through that work, generations of students and leaders have been challenged to lead with integrity and purpose.

His heart for developing Christian leaders reached around the world through his service with Haggai International. As Chairman of the Board, Bob helped advance the organization’s mission of equipping influential Christian leaders to share the Gospel and transform their communities. He believed deeply in investing in leaders who could multiply their impact for God’s Kingdom.

Though Bob built one of the world’s largest automotive transportation companies and helped establish enduring ministries and institutions, he would have been the first to tell you that his greatest blessings were his faith, his family, and the opportunity to invest in the lives of others.

While Bob accomplished much professionally and philanthropically, his family was his greatest earthly treasure.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 44 years, Cherry Rutland, whose partnership, faith, and love shaped much of his life’s journey. After Cherry’s passing, Bob married Dolores, with whom he shared three years before cancer once again brought loss into his life.

Bob is survived by his daughters, Dawn Trygg and her husband Ken, Shelly Hall and her husband Hunter, and Carie Cordero and her husband Clete.

He was a devoted grandfather to Tyler Trygg, Brielle Trygg, Jackson Hall and his wife Kate, Stedman Hall, Holden Hall, Lauren Hall, Ansley Cordero, Braden Cordero and his wife Jamie, and Carson Cordero.

Bob also eagerly anticipated the arrival of his twin great-grandsons, Clayton Cordero and Wyatt Cordero, who are expected later this year to his grandson Braden and wife Jamie.

Bob is also survived by countless friends, colleagues, ministry partners, and leaders around the world whose lives were profoundly impacted by his faith, generosity, encouragement, and example.

More than the companies he built, the boards he served, or the organizations he helped establish, Bob’s true legacy is found in people. It lives on in family members he loved, leaders he mentored, employees he encouraged, students he inspired, and believers he challenged to follow Christ more faithfully.

He demonstrated that true success is not measured by what we accumulate, but by what we give away.

His family rejoices in the confidence that Bob’s faith has become sight and that he is now in the presence of the Savior he loved and served throughout his life.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
