With deep love and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Raymond Eugene Pemberton, of Covington, Georgia, who departed this life on August 8, 2025, at the age of 75.
Raymond was born on May 23, 1950, in Mishawaka, Indiana, and lived a life defined by love, mischief, and service. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, where he was awarded three purple hearts during his service in the Vietnam War.
Following his military service, Raymond built a respected and fulfilling career in construction, eventually retiring from RJ Griffin Construction. Known for his leadership, he left a lasting mark on both his profession and the people he worked with.
A man who appreciated life’s simple joys, Raymond was a lifelong Notre Dame Football and Atlanta Braves fan, a connoisseur of dad jokes, and a devoted grandfather who loved nothing more than sharing snacks, tall tales, and gas money with his grandchildren. He carried himself with confidence and a warm heart.
Raymond is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Linda Pemberton, and their children: Shannon & Jeff Billingsley, Crystal & Keith Mayhue, and Tiffany & Chris McWaters. He was a proud grandfather to Destinee Billingsley, Kristen Barr, Dakoda & Emily Billingsley, Ivy McWaters, Hollynd Mayhue, Grayden Mayhue, Madalyn Adams, Justys Bottorf, and Hunter Mefford, and a cherished great-grandfather to Ella, Ren, Audrey, Skylar, Cade, Frankie Sue, and Tristian. He is also survived by his siblings: sisters Mary Wade and Susie Brill, and brothers Wayne Pemberton, Jimmy Pemberton, and John Pemberton, along with a host of nieces and nephews who held him in the highest regard.
Raymond was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Melva and Howard Pemberton, his son Stephen Pemberton, and his granddaughter Shelby McWaters. Their memory was a constant part of his life, and we take comfort knowing they are reunited now.
A drop-in celebration of Raymond’s life will be held from 1pm - 4pm on Saturday, August 16, at Hard Labor Creek State Park, Group Shelter Two. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Shelby Shines On Foundation at ShelbyShinesOn.org or PO Box 54, Covington, GA 30015.
Raymond Eugene Pemberton loved without condition and lived with a quick wit. His presence will be deeply missed, but the legacy he leaves behind will continue in the lives of all who were blessed to know him.
