Mrs. Berthalene Payne, of Covington, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at the age of 84. She was a longtime member of the Voice of Pentecost Church and portrayed God’s love and kindness to everyone she knew and met. She had a heart for giving to others whether she knew them or not. She was an accomplished cook and loved providing meals for her family completed by the finest China, crystal, silverware, and fine linens. She taught and practiced proper etiquette in everything she did. Her life’s motto was “simple but elegant.” She was a true Southern lady in every sense of the word. She loved and served the Lord all of her life and treasured her family time beyond measure. She was very proud of her long career at Sherwin Williams Corporate office and loved them like her family away from home. She had a great work ethic like no other and devoted many long years and hours to her career there until retirement.
Mrs. Payne was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Sallie Vaughn; husband, Jimmy Payne; infant son, Carl Allen; and brothers, Glenn Vaughn, Jr., Dan Vaughn.
Survivors include her daughter, Joy Brady (Jim) of North Carolina; son, David Allen (Denise) of Covington; grandchildren, Elzabeth Slama (Abdallah), Austin Johnson, Anslynn Johnson, Heath Allen (Brittany), Lacy Abadie (Ryan); great-grandchildren, Connor Denaux, Caitlyn Denaux, Rhett Allen, Noah Abadie, Laurel Abadie; brothers, Jack Vaughn (Pat), Claude Tip Vaughn (Sandra), Charles Vaughn; sisters, Margaret Ozburn, Shirley Watson, Sallie Jeanette Knapp (Don), Barbara Lott; along with a host of nieces and nephews which she cherished as her own, several step children, and grandchildren. She is also survived by her 2 special caretakers, Nancy Williams and Jennifer Smith. Also, a special thank you to Longleaf Hospice for their care and concern.
A Funeral Service for Mrs. Payne will be held Saturday, November 18, 2023, 2:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Ashley Vaughn and Rev. Gavin Moon officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park, in Covington. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home, prior to her service, from 11:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M.
