John Chesnut, of Covington, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2022, at the age of 77. Mr. Chesnut was a graduate of Newton County High School and Georgia Southwestern State University; and earned his Master’s Degree in finance from Louisiana State University. He was a dedicated employee at Bank of Covington and Main Street Bank for over 30 years. Mr. Chesnut served his community in banking as an Executive Vice President. He was a member of the Rotary Club and very involved with the Empty Stocking Fund. Mr. Chesnut was also a member of Covington First Presbyterian Church. He was an avid golfer and played every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon. After retiring, he always played golf on Mondays and worked part-time at Fox Winery. Mr. Chesnut was a people person and always enjoyed being with his friends and helping customers. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Mr. Chesnut was preceded in death by his parents, John R. Sr., and Sarah (Huff) Chesnut.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Chesnut; daughter, Lori Chesnut Banks; grandchildren, John Blake Mask, Sarah-Kate Banks; several cousins, nieces, and nephews; sisters-in-law, Carol Standard, June Hilton; and brothers-in-law, Phil Standard, Franklin Hilton.

A Memorial Service for Mr. Chesnut will be held Tuesday, March 8, 2022, 3:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Todd Hilton, Carol Standard, and Bill Norton officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home, one hour prior to his service, from 2:00 - 3:00 P.M.

Governor Brian Kemp’s latest executive order has eliminated restrictions on large gatherings; however, CDC guidelines recommend social distancing (6 feet apart) and wearing of masks while in public. Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home requests that you observe these recommendations while in our funeral home attending visitations and/or services.
