Jo Thompson, of Decatur, passed away Friday, May 17, 2024, at the age of 89. Jo grew up in Porterdale, where she attended Porterdale Baptist Church and went to Newton County High School. She and Virgil were married on April 13, 1958, and later moved to Decatur where she then attended Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Jo worked for Coca-Cola until she had her children and dedicated her time to raising them and then went back to work for John H. Harland until she retired. In her spare time, she enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, word searches, traveling, and collecting dolls. In addition, she loved gospel music and talking with people. But above all else, she loved her family and was a dedicated mom and granny to her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil L. Thompson; Mother, Lucy Hix; Father, L.A Hix; son-in-law, David Steele; and brother, Al Hix.
Survivors include her daughter, Pam Steele; son, Jeff Thompson (Barbara); grandchildren, Sharon Breach (Craig), Brian Thompson, Dustin Steele, Ashlyn Steele; great-grandchildren, Isaac Breach, Savannah Breach, Kane Steele, Cooper Steele; as well as her sister, Linda Lowber (Jerry).
A Funeral Service for Mrs. Thompson will be held Sunday, May 19, 2024, 3:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Mike Hardy officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home Sunday, one hour prior to her service, from 2:00 – 3:00 P.M.
