James Ernest Carter, Jr., of Conyers, passed away Friday, September 15, 2023, at the age of 82. Mr. Carter was a firefighter for over 21 years with the City of Atlanta. He was a child of God and loved the Lord. Mr. Carter was a spontaneous and funny man with a kind gentle soul. He adored his family and treasured his grandchildren with all his heart. Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his daughter, Miriam Anita Carter; granddaughter, Sarah Marie Brandt; parents, James Ernest and Esther Elizabeth Carter; and cousin, Shirley.
His daughter Deborah received a card from him recently that stated, “Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God.” Philippians 1:3. She will remember her dad’s love for all his family and his joyful spirit.
Mr. Carter’s daughter Rebecca (Becky) will miss his fun spirit, generosity, and sense of humor. He was the best dad ever.
His son Ted will remember him for being a special person with a wonderful spirit. He is so fortunate to have had him as a father. He was a wonderful artist and a musician that always
inspired Ted.
Mr. Carter’s beloved Sequoyah will remember him as the greatest comedic storyteller that has ever walked the Earth. He could make everyone smile.
He was a voracious reader of classic literature, a creative writer, student of God's Word, musician (banjo, harmonica, accordion, and guitar), and artist. His sense of humor was unmatched. He wanted to share with and teach his children and grandchildren everything he knew and wanted to know. He played scrabble and chess with little mercy and celebrated everything with pure joy. He was a lovely gentleman.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Carter; daughters, Deborah Maria, Rebecca Brandt (Paul); sons, Tim Carter (Melissa), Ted Carter; grandchildren, Brilla Rose, Sequoyah Carter, JD Brandt, Jacob Thomas Brandt, Bethany Cimino, Noah Carter, Evan Carter; great-grandchild, Jeremiah Brandt; and brother, Dan Cowan (Joy).
This obituary was prepared with love and affection by Mr. Carter's family.
