Obituary

James “Jay” Milligan of Covington passed away Friday, May 8, 2026, at the age of 87. He attended Newton County High School and later joined the United States Marine Corps in 1957, where he achieved the rank of Corporal. He was proud to be a Marine and considered his time in uniform one of his greatest accomplishments. After completing his military duty, he worked as a barber for a short time before beginning his career at the General Motors Lakewood Assembly Plant, where he remained until retirement. James loved football and served as an assistant coach at George Walton Academy, where his wife taught school. He enjoyed golf, woodworking, and entertaining anyone willing to watch with his magic tricks.

Mr. Milligan loved his family dearly, especially his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Polly Milligan; daughter, Julie; and his parents, James Arthur and Hazel Milligan.

Survivors include his son, Michael Milligan (Pamela); daughter, Michelle DeAnn; and grandchildren, Taylor Bradford (Luke) and Jacob Bishop (Elizabeth), as well as other loving family members.

A Memorial Service for Mr. Milligan will be held Thursday, May 14, 2026, 2:00 P.M., at East Newton Baptist Church, 11290 Highway 278, in Covington, with interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park.
