James Harold Gates, Jr., of Oxford, passed away Saturday, December 20, 2025, at the age of 77. Mr. Gates was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved his family very dearly. He proudly served three years in the United States Army and carried that sense of dedication throughout his life. Mr. Gates enjoyed traveling, especially trips to the mountains and cruising with loved ones. A talented woodworker and craftsman, he found joy in his shop, surrounded by his tools and projects. He also played the piano by ear and had a deep love for music. Rooted in Porterdale, he cherished his hometown and maintained many lifelong friendships there. Mr. Gates will be remembered for his skill, warmth, and unwavering love for family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janie Gates; son, Jeff Gates; parents, Pearly and Betty Gates.
Survivors include his daughter, Stephanie Deanne Nash (Bennie); grandchildren, Kerrie Gardner (Gilbert), Frank Nash (Sarah), Gavin Gates (Shelby), Aislin Gates; great-grandchildren, Cooper Nash, Sarah Mae Wesley, Declan Beasley, Serena Diaz, Jack Nash, Nora Nash, Buck Nash, Frankie Nash; sister, Gina Taylor (Keith); brother, Mike Gates (Carla); as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Graveside Service for Mr. Gates will be held Friday, December 26, 2025, 12:00 P.M., at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, in Covington. Friends are invited to visit with the family Friday, two hours prior to his service from 10:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M., at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road.
