In Loving Memory of Hugh LaVern “Blunt” Patterson, Sr.

September 18, 1935 – July 16, 2025

Hugh LaVern Patterson, Sr., of Covington, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at the age of 89. With profound sadness and overwhelming love, we announce the passing of Hugh Lavern Patterson, Sr.—affectionately known as “Blunt”—a man whose legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. He passed peacefully surrounded by family, leaving behind a lifetime of unforgettable memories, immeasurable love, and a legacy of kindness, talent, and unwavering generosity.

Blunt was more than a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend—he was a legend.

A gifted athlete from an early age, Blunt was drafted as a catcher by the Cincinnati Reds, a testament to his natural ability and fierce determination. He was also a football star and would go on to leave an indelible mark in the world of fast pitch softball. After serving his country in the United States Navy immediately after high school, he made the military professional baseball team in Hawaii and later joined the professional team in Japan. Upon returning home, he poured his heart into fast pitch softball, becoming one of Georgia’s top 3 pitchers and earning his rightful place in the ASA Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame.

Blunt’s talents didn’t end on the field. He had a beautiful voice and a deep love of music. In high school, he started a traveling quartet, and throughout his life, his voice brought joy and comfort to many. Whether through song, story, or service, he had a way of lighting up every room he entered.

His service didn’t end with his time in the Navy. For over 30 years, Blunt brought magic and joy to thousands of children and families as a real-life Santa Claus—embodying the true spirit of Christmas with every smile, laugh, and hug. It was more than a costume to him; it was a calling.

He was a man with a heart of gold. He would do anything for anyone, never met a stranger, and had a story for every occasion. Blunt’s warmth, kindness, and quick wit left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.

He was the rock of his family—the best husband, the proudest father, and the most loving grandfather. His love for his family knew no bounds, and they loved him just as fiercely in return.

Blunt lived a life filled with purpose, passion, and people. He gave endlessly and loved deeply. The world was better with him in it—and though he is no longer here in body, his spirit, his stories, and his love will live on forever in all of us.

He is survived by his devoted family, who will continue to honor his legacy through love, laughter, and the stories he left behind.

Rest easy, Blunt. You were truly the best man any of us could have ever known.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Onie and Harold Zack Patterson; brothers, James Patterson, Billy Patterson, Harold Patterson; and sister, Grace Cagle.

Survivors include his loving wife, Marlene Patterson; daughter, Beth Mize (Shannon); son, Hugh Patterson, Jr.; grandchildren, Trey Patterson, Drew and Brittany Patterson, Tiffany and Sam Garrett, Maddie Mize, Avery Mize; 5 Great-Grandchildren; sister, Sandra Long; as well as several nieces and nephews.
