Ernest Franklin Evans, Sr., of Covington, passed away Thursday, August 6, 2026, at the age of 87. Mr. Evans lived a life centered on service, family, and community. A devoted husband for 50 years, he treasured every moment spent with his family, especially his beloved grandchildren. He had a passion for sports and dedicated countless hours to coaching baseball and football, mentoring and encouraging generations of young athletes. Always willing to lend a helping hand, he touched the lives of many young people in the community, offering support both on and off the field.
Known affectionately around town as the "Watermelon Man," Mr. Evans never met a stranger. He found great joy in the outdoors, whether he was fishing, farming, or working on woodworking projects. A loyal Atlanta Braves fan, he also enjoyed cheering on his favorite team whenever he could. In addition, he loved watching wrestling. His kind heart, generous spirit, and unwavering love for his family and community will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Liz Evans; parents, Ben F. Evans and Rosie Lee Hendricks; daughter, Deborah Foster; daughter-in-law, Sonya Evans; sister, Nora Lee Loggins; brothers, Pat Evans, Ben H. Evans.
Survivors include his sons, Ernie Evans (Serena), Johnny Evans (Kim), Greg Evans (Connie); grandchildren, Joshua Parker, Sarah Alarcon (Jerry), Amelia Rose Cannon, Michelle Burton (Bryce), Lisa Adams (Tyler), Kailyn Evans, Amber Vaughn (Jarron), Mackenzie Almodovar (Andrew), Skyler Foster (David); 12 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service for Mr. Evans will be held Sunday, August 9, 2026, 3:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home, Saturday, August 8, from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M.
