Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Elizabeth “Joyce” Rooks Allen, who went home peacefully on March 11, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on July 24, 1938, in Auburn, Georgia, Joyce lived a life defined by love, faith, dedication, and a deep devotion to her family and community.

Joyce was the youngest of ten children born to John H. Rooks and Cora Johnson Rooks, all of whom preceded her in death. Growing up in a large family helped shape the caring, resilient, and compassionate woman she became.

She attended Winder-Barrow High School and graduated with the Class of 1956. Known for her determination and lively spirit, Joyce was honored as “Most Athletic” Senior Girl, a reflection of her enthusiasm and drive. After high school, she continued her education at Massey Business School, preparing for a career marked by dedication and service.

Joyce began her professional career with Wrigley’s Gum and later joined the City of Covington, where she faithfully served for many years. Through her hard work and leadership, she became the Manager of the Billing Department, a position she held with pride until her retirement. She was respected by coworkers and friends alike for her integrity, reliability, and willingness to help others.

At the center of Joyce’s life was her beloved husband, Donald Lewis Allen, her high school sweetheart. Their marriage was a beautiful testament to lifelong love and partnership.

Joyce was a devoted Christian, and her faith was the foundation of her life. She lived her beliefs through her kindness, compassion, and the way she cared for others. Her gentle spirit and encouraging words were a blessing to those around her.

Above all, Joyce was a loving mother and proud grandmother who treasured her family. She is survived by her two children, Debbie Allen Shepherd (Marty) and Chuck Allen (Kelli). She was a devoted grandmother to Lauren Shepherd Kerr (Chad), Jacob Allen, and Abigayle Elizabeth Allen, and a proud great-grandmother to Lorelei and Emmaline Grace, who brought her great joy.

Joyce will also be fondly remembered for the warmth she shared in her home and kitchen. Her peanut butter cookies, pound cake, and coconut pie were favorites among family and friends and became sweet traditions that brought everyone together. Those simple acts of love created memories that will be cherished for generations.

She also had a special place in her heart for her beloved cat and faithful companion, Sophie, who brought her comfort and companionship.

Joyce will be remembered for her warm heart, her quiet strength, and the love she shared so freely with those around her. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of faith, love, and family will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Joyce’s life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and she will be forever loved and remembered.

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Allen will be held Tuesday, March 17, 2026, 2:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with interment following in Covington City Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home, one hour prior to her service from 1:00 - 2:00 P.M.
