Earl Hothem, of Covington, passed away Monday, July 21, 2025, at the age of 89. Mr. Hothem, a dedicated public servant, engineer, soldier, and family man, passed away leaving behind a life marked by integrity, curiosity, and quiet strength. Born with a passion for learning and service, he built a long and impactful career that spanned decades in both the military and civil engineering.

From 1962 to 1977, Mr. Hothem worked as a Professional Engineer, contributing his talents to organizations such as Burgess and Niple, GoodKind and O’Dea, Fulton County, Peachtree Corners, and Mayer and Associates. In 1977, he began a new chapter with the Army Corps of Engineers, where he proudly served until his retirement in 2002. Simultaneously, he served with honor in the U.S. Army Reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Beyond his professional life, Mr. Hothem was a devoted family man who cherished time spent with his loved ones. He found joy in the simple things, taking scenic drives to small towns, eating at local diners, and exploring the hidden corners of the state. His love for storytelling and vivid recollections of the “old days” brought warmth and laughter to many gatherings. He was an avid fan of classic Westerns and old country music, often relaxing to the familiar tunes and tales of a bygone era.

A faithful member of Porterdale Baptist Church, Mr. Hothem lived his life grounded in faith and service. His legacy is one of dedication to his country, his community, and most of all, his family. He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Hothem.

Survivors include his son, Eric Hothem (Stacie); grandchildren, Aaron Hothem (Kayla), Annberlee Hothem, Christie Robinson (Philip), Stacy Guin (Tony), David Andrews (Lauren); great-grandchildren, Ethan Guin, Brayden Guin, Isaac Guin, Abbigail Robinson, Addie Andrews, Luke Andrews, Harper Andrews.

A Funeral Service for Mr. Hothem will be held Friday, July 25, 2025, 2:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor David Wheeler officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park, in Covington. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home two hours prior to his service, from 12 Noon - 2:00 P.M.
