Robert Danny Thompson's Obituary

Robert Danny Thompson, beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, fiancé, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, at the age of 68. Born October 30, 1957, Danny’s journey was marked by love, laughter, and perseverance. Danny’s farewell was gently wrapped in love and celebration, fittingly on his dad’s birthday.

Danny treasured the years spent coaching his son’s and daughter's baseball and softball teams. Even after those years, Danny never stopped coaching; whether he was watching from the outfield or wandering wherever his restless spirit led him. He dedicated countless hours and resources ensuring Todd and Deidre thrived in whatever they pursued, teaching them grit, teamwork, and determination. His pride in their accomplishments was boundless.

Friendship was another cornerstone of Danny’s life. Blessed with loyal friends since his childhood Porterdale days, stories could be shared forever. The miraculous days at the close of his life were spent surrounded by some of these treasured friends, swapping stories of the “good times,” reliving memories, and savoring the laughter that defined their lifelong camaraderie. In those moments, Danny made sure that Todd, Deidre, Angela, all his family, and his many friends knew how special they were to him, and Danny ensured comfort and peace for those he’d leave behind.

Danny found joy on the open road, riding his purple Harley as his father once did. He was a lifelong Braves and Georgia Bulldogs fan, and he always had a love for NASCAR. Danny’s dream came true when he attended a race at Daytona Motor Speedway with his fiancé in his final year - a memory cherished forever.

He would get lost in time and forget the world around him walking the fields and looking for arrowheads to add to his exceptional collection, while hunting deer, and prepping the dove field on his tractor. Opening days for deer and dove hunting seasons were two days he looked forward to most every year.

Summers brought Danny to the beach, lake, and pool, carrying forward the adventurous spirit of his youth spent skiing on Jackson Lake. Later in life, his greatest joys were taking his grandson Waylon fishing at “Johnny’s” pond; getting pet rabbits, ducks, and chickens for his grandkids, adventures with Abby and Rose, watching them ride their dirt bikes - creating moments that will be remembered by his family for years to come.

Danny’s legacy is woven between those handlebars into the hearts of his loved ones, in the laughter of his grandchildren, the friendships he cultivated, and the memories he leaves behind.

Danny was preceded in death by his wife, Dianne “DeDe” Thompson; his parents, Bob and Wynette Thompson; and his most beloved dog, Honey. He is survived by his son Todd Thompson (Mia), daughter Deidre Roper, grandchildren Abby, Rosalie, and Waylon, sister Carol Allgood (David), fiancé Angela Ashley, and his loyal dogs, Lizzie and Minnie.

A celebration of Danny’s life will be held Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 2PM at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, Covington, GA, with burial to follow at Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 12-2PM prior to the service.
