Jovie

June 4, 2008 - August 30, 2021

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of our beloved Grief Therapy Dog, Jovie.

Jovie has been a part of the Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home and Lawnwood Memorial Park family since 2010. She was trained by Megan Jefferson from Flowery Branch, GA, and certified through Therapy Dogs International.

Jovie supported our mission to care for those in grief by attending regular grief support groups as well as being available to attend visitations if requested. She also supported the Newton County Theme School through reading therapy with multiple 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade classes. She was also adored by the residents of Merryvale Assisted Living whom she visited often. Most recently she visited the Covington/Newton County 911 Center to prepare them for their own therapy dog, Annie.

Jovie appeared on Atlanta's Fox 5 News, in the Covington News and also had a children’s book written about the work she did with the children at the Newton County Theme School.

When Jovie wasn’t working to help others, she lived with our Director of Grief and Bereavement Services, Adam Cooper, his wife and Peer Grief Facilitator, Angie Cooper, and their two girls, Lenzie and Samantha. She had two Canine “siblings” Carmen and Oakland who made cameo appearances in her book.

Jovie has helped children gain confidence in reading, helped brighten the day of those in Assisted Living and Memory Care, and helped ease the burden of many journeying through grief. She will be missed dearly.
