Timothy Bumann Obituary

Timothy A. Bumann of Madison passed away April 7, 2017, at 57 years of age. COL Bumann served with the 911 Support Battalion in force protection before moving to Command of the 57th Schools Battalion overseeing training for the GSDF professional military education program. From Schools COL Bumann transferred to HQ G3 - Operations/Training and Plans as the G34, the Force Anti-Terrorism Officer. While filling this position with the GSDF, he also filled the companion slot for the GA National Guard HQ as the J34 State Anti-Terrorism Officer.

Mr. Bumann was a Partner in the Litigation Practice of Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP since 2006,
advising international and domestic clients on product liability, regulatory, import/export and security matters. He began trying cases in 1988 and since then has tried cases all over the United States. Mr. Bumann served as a Municipal Court Judge pro tem in East Point, Georgia and in Monticello, Georgia. He served on the Jasper County, Georgia, Board of Tax Equalization from 2002 until 2008.
Mr. Bumann is a National Rifle Association certified instructor in multiple disciplines. He is rated "Expert" or "Distinguished Expert" with several different firearms and skills. He is also an NRA Certified Range Safety Officer.

Mr. Bumann and his wife, Karan, showed Paint and Pinto horses for many years. He is a former American Pinto Horse Association Director for Georgia and has served on the Association's Shows and International Competitions Committees.

Mr. Bumann received his B.S. degree in Political Science from Georgia Southern College in 1984 and his J.D. degree from Georgia State University, College of Law in 1987. He is a member of the Georgia Bar and admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Georgia Supreme Court and Georgia Court of Appeals and 11th Federal Circuit Courts of Appeal, as well as the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Middle Districts in Georgia, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Mr. Bumann held membership in Coast Guard Aviation Association, National Rifle Association, Single Action Shooting Society, International Defensive Pistol Association, and Safari Club International.
Mr. Bumann wrote several books, articles and pamphlets with a focus on products liability and spoke at numerous seminars over the years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore J. and Frances (Birdsong) Bumann; sister, Patricia Ann Bumann; brother, Paul W. Bumann.

Survivors include his wife, Karan Bumann of Madison; step-son, Brian Peters and his wife, Amanda, of Jefferson; grandchildren, Tyler Peters, Violet Nosal, Gavin Peters, Bailey Peters; sister, Pauline Bumann of Buckhead; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service for Mr. Bumann will be held Friday, April 14. 2017, 11:00 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Dan Wilson and Pastor Ed Westbrook officiating. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service at the Funeral Home on Friday, from 10:00 - 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity for veterans.
