Pierce Lovett Cline

U.S. Veteran

Pierce Lovett Cline of Social Circle, passed away peacefully at his home, November 3, 2012, at the age of 85. He died just one day after celebrating his 54th wedding anniversary with his loving wife, Margie. Mr. Cline was born in White Plains, GA, to the late J.E. and Eunice (Lovett) Cline, and moved to Oxford when he was eleven years old. He attended Oxford College before transferring to the University of Georgia where he received an Agricultural Economics degree. While at UGA, he received his pilot’s license, sang in the Men’s Glee Club, played trumpet in the Red Coat Band, and served in the ROTC. Once he returned home, he eventually became Captain in the Covington Army Reserve. At the age of 60, he began hiking the Appalachian Trail, in sections, for ten years. Mr. Cline was a pillar of the community, and was largely responsible for Georgia Perimeter College – Newton Campus, and supported several service groups and local projects. He was recently awarded the R. Carl Chandler Award, a lifetime achievement award presented by Oxford College. Upon receiving his award, Mr. Cline stated, “I’ve had a long, healthy adventurous life. I am most grateful and have few regrets. Oxford College and education have been a magnificent part of my life.” Rob Fowler, III, close friend and presenter of the award, called him the “consummate path finder and mentor to me. There were people who said, ‘Why should we do this or that?’ Mr. Cline would say, ‘Why not?’ He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the entire community.

Survivors include his loving wife, Margie (Greene) Cline; children, Carol Cline and Kenneth Noteboom, Charles and Melinda Cline, Paul and Belinda Cline; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; sister, Lucy Cline Huie; several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Mr. Pierce Cline will be held Sunday, November 11, 2012, 4:00 PM, at Allen Memorial United Methodist Church, in Oxford, with Rev. Max Vincent officiating. The family will receive friends, in the Allen Memorial Chapel, following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oxford College of Emory University’s Cline Music Scholarship Fund for the benefit of Allen Memorial Church, 100 Hamill Street, Oxford, GA 30054; or Georgia Perimeter College Scholarship Fund for Newton County Students, 239 Cedar Lane, Covington, GA 30014.
