CONCERT FOR A CURE
FUNDRAISER FOR AMERICAN CANCER
SOCIETY - RELAY FOR LIFE

At Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home we are especially proud of our service with the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. Staff member Kari Saunchegraw serves on the Newton County Relay For Life Committee, and the Concert for A Cure fundraiser series was an idea developed by Kate Caldwell Tucker, and implemented with the help of our entire staff.

The first Concert for A Cure was held October 29, 2010, in the Access Road Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan. The Chapel was transformed into a concert hall and local performers Johanna Horstmann, Soni Brumlow and Kate Tucker, along with New York Broadway artist Eric L. Summers and Sony Nashville recording artist, Corey Crowder, donated their talents.

As advertising appeared locally, word spread that a "pop concert" was taking place in the Chapel at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home. This seemed to confuse the public. Our purpose was offered some support and explanation in the form of a editorial in The Covington News, which ran on October 27, 2010, and stated, in part, "There was a time that going to the funeral home always brought about sadness and a little fear of the unknown. . . . But the experience of visiting your local funeral home in the last few years has changed from mourning death to a celebration of a life well lived. . . . The folks at Caldwell & Cowan are going a step further tonight as they offer a real celebration of life - a benefit concert for Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. . . ."

The venue for the second in the Concert for A Cure series, held March 11, 2011, was a local eaterie, Mama Maria's Italian Restaurant. The concert was co-sponsored by Caldwell & Cowan and Mama Maria's, and Mama Maria's donated their back dining room for the concert, as well as 10% of their proceeds from food sales for the evening. Featured performers were again Johanna, Soni and Kate, with April Allen, David Disharoon and Jon Scott being added to the list. Band members included Eddie Brumlow (both concerts), Jon Johnson, Colt Saunchegraw, Corey Crowder, David Disharoon, Jon Scott and Clint Kent.

All performers and staff donated their time for both concerts, and both concerts were considered a great success.
